Strike: LASU Suspends Exams, Academic Activities Indefinitely

Lagos State University (LASU) has announced the indefinite suspension of all academic and socio-academic activities, including the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, due to the ongoing industrial action by staff unions.

The examinations were originally set to begin on Monday, August 4, 2025.

The decision was taken during a virtual emergency meeting of the university’s Senate on Saturday, August 2, 2025, following the report of a strike declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions. The JAC comprises ASUU-LASU, NASU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, and NAAT-LASU.

According to a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the Senate clarified that the strike is directed at the Lagos State Government and not the university’s management.

The Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate noted that the university management had been actively working in recent weeks to mediate between the unions and the state government.

“A high-level meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, was held on Friday, August 1, 2025, with representatives of the unions, university management, and relevant ministries in attendance. It was agreed that consultations would continue, and all parties are expected to reconvene on Thursday, August 7, 2025,” the statement read.

In light of the strike, the Senate ordered the suspension of the second semester examinations and all other activities until further notice. Students residing in campus hostels have been directed to vacate by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025.
