Sultan directs Muslims to watch for new moon on Saturday

The Sultanate Council in Sokoto has announced that Saturday, August 23, 2025, corresponding to the 29th of Safar 1447 AH, will be dedicated to the sighting of the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447 AH.

In a statement on Friday, the Chairman of the Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Junaidu, who is also the Wazirin Sokoto, urged Muslims across the country to take part in the moon sighting exercise.

“Muslims are advised to look out for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal on Saturday and report any sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs,” the statement read.

The Council noted that the exercise is crucial as it marks the beginning of Rabi’ul Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar, revered as the month of the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) birth.r
