DSS Drags Sowore, X, and Meta to Court Over Posts on Tinubu

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count charge against former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, along with social media platforms X Corp and Meta Inc., over posts deemed critical of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The suit, dated September 16, 2025, was lodged at the Federal High Court in Abuja after Sowore allegedly refused to take down posts concerning the President.
The charges were filed on behalf of the DSS and the Federal Government by M.B. Abubakar, Director of Public Prosecutions at the Federal Ministry of Justice, supported by four DSS lawyers—M.E. Ernest, U.B. Bulla, Dr. C.S. Eze, and E.G. Orubor.
Reacting to the development in a Facebook post on Tuesday, Sowore confirmed the case, saying:
“The State Security Service today filed a five-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and myself. They claimed that because I called Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu a criminal, I somehow committed a set of ‘novel’ offences they invented and spread across five counts. Regardless, I will be present whenever this case is assigned for trial. #RevolutionNow.”
It was earlier reported that the activist and African Action Congress candidate in the 2023 election had vowed not to delete the controversial tweet, despite DSS’ formal request to X for its removal.
Reaffirming his stance, Sowore disclosed that X had notified him about receiving a legal request from the DSS concerning his account. He wrote:
“This morning, X officially contacted me about the despicable threat letter they received from the lawless DSS over my tweet on Tinubu. One option I will NOT be taking is deleting that tweet. Thank you, @X.”
He also shared X’s transparency message, which confirmed the platform had received a takedown request from the DSS.
The message stated that while the agency claimed Sowore’s content violated Nigerian law, no action had been taken on the post.

X explained that its policy is to notify users of government takedown requests and encouraged Sowore to seek legal advice or pursue other options to challenge the complaint. The company also pointed him to its Help Centre and Transparency Report for further information.
