A senior police officer, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ebong Thompson, has earned widespread commendation after turning down an N800,000 bribe meant to secure the release of a robbery suspect and conceal evidence of the crime.
According to a statement issued by the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, on Friday, the bribe was offered by one Emmanuel Mendie Peter in a desperate attempt to free his associate, 53-year-old David Samuel Isaac, who had been arrested for armed robbery.
The arrest followed the recovery of a Samsung smartphone, stolen at gunpoint, which was traced directly to Isaac. Investigations revealed that Isaac had previously been arrested and prosecuted for similar offences but resumed criminal activity after his release.
Peter was taken into custody at the SWAT office shortly after delivering the bribe. Both suspects are now in police custody and will be charged accordingly.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has commended CSP Thompson and the officers involved in the case, presenting them with letters of commendation for their professionalism and integrity. He also warned members of the public against attempts to compromise police investigations.
