Panic in Tungan Maje as Residents Flee Homes Following Military Threats Over Land Dispute

Residents of Tungan Maje, a community on the outskirts of Abuja, have been forced to flee their homes following alleged threats from Nigerian soldiers over a land dispute. The incident, which has sparked widespread fear, unfolded after military personnel reportedly warned occupants to vacate the area or face severe consequences.
Eyewitnesses recounted how armed soldiers stormed the community, issuing ultimatums and warning residents to leave immediately. Many families, fearing for their lives, hastily abandoned their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring areas. Some residents claimed that the military personnel insisted the land belonged to them, escalating tensions between the community and the authorities.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed deep concern over the situation. “We were in our homes when soldiers arrived, telling us we have no right to be here. They threatened that if we refused to leave, they would take action. We had no choice but to run for safety,” he said.
The dispute reportedly stems from conflicting claims between the community and military authorities over the ownership of the land. While local leaders assert that the area rightfully belongs to indigenous settlers, military officials are allegedly pushing to take control, citing government ownership.
Community leaders have called on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to intervene urgently to prevent further escalation. “We need a peaceful resolution to this crisis. People cannot continue to live in fear, unsure if they will be attacked or displaced overnight,” one leader stated.
As of now, there has been no official response from the Nigerian Army regarding the allegations. However, advocacy groups and human rights organizations are urging the government to investigate the matter and ensure the safety of affected residents.
With tensions running high, the people of Tungan Maje remain uncertain about their future, hoping that authorities will step in to address the situation before it spirals out of control.
