Abiodun Rewards Falcons, Lionesses with N30m, Pushes for More Sports Hosting in Ogun

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to turning the state into a leading destination for both local and international sports, following the successful hosting of friendly match between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and the Cameroonian Lionesses at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

After the Falcons’ 2-0 victory, Abiodun announced that the state had more major events in the pipeline, including the U-18 and U-20 African Athletics Championships and the WAFU regional competitions.

“We are determined to create an enabling environment for a thriving sports economy. What you are seeing now is just the beginning,” the governor said.

He noted that the match was further proof that Ogun’s strategy to attract high-profile sporting events is working.

Abiodun emphasized that the recently renovated MKO Abiola Sports Arena is not just a venue for competition, but a platform to nurture youth talent and foster national unity.

“The success of this event, coming right after we hosted the 22nd National Sports Festival, shows we are on the right path,” he added. “We’re deliberate with every decision. Ogun isn’t just about industry or education—we want it to be a gateway to excellence, tourism, and sports.”

Highlighting the unifying power of sports in Nigeria, he said, “For those 90 minutes, no one remembers if they’re Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa. We’re all Nigerians.”

In recognition of their efforts, Governor Abiodun gifted a total of N30 million to both teams—N20 million to the Super Falcons and N10 million to the visiting Lionesses—according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The NFF praised the gesture, calling it a major morale boost for the players. General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi expressed gratitude on behalf of the federation.

“This kind of support from leaders goes a long way in inspiring athletes to give their best,” Sanusi said. “We thank Governor Abiodun for this generous and uplifting gesture.”
