Federal Polytechnic Bauchi Shut Indefinitely After Students Protest Robbery Attack

The Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, has been closed indefinitely following a violent protest by students over a late-night robbery at the male hostel.

In a statement signed by the Registrar, Alhaji Kasimu Salihu, the management said it received “disturbing news” that unidentified assailants broke into the hostel, stole students’ belongings, and injured at least two people.

According to the school, management and principal officers responded immediately, but the initially peaceful protest was hijacked by hoodlums.

The administration ordered all students to vacate the campus within two hours, citing security concerns, and said the shutdown would remain until further notice.

The robbery, which occurred overnight, sparked an early-morning demonstration, with students blocking the Bauchi–Dass Road and barricading the school’s main gate.

The situation worsened when suspected thugs joined in, blocking the federal highway near the institution. Police dispersed the crowd with tear gas, prompting some protesters to hurl stones before being subdued.

Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Haruna Umar, condemned the attack, describing it as unprecedented in the school’s history. “This is students showing their grievances to management and authorities,” he said.

One victim, Matta Musa, a class representative in ND I Computer Science, sustained a head injury, while others were taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) for treatment.
