Nigerian Customs Service Disbands Joint Border Patrol Team, Cuts Down Checkpoints Nationwide

In a significant move aimed at streamlining operations and fostering smoother trade across the country, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has officially announced the dissolution of its Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT). The agency also revealed plans to reduce the number of checkpoints nationwide to improve efficiency and ease movement.

The decision to disband the JBPT is part of a broader strategy to reform border management and enhance trade facilitation while ensuring security measures remain intact. By cutting down on the number of checkpoints, the NCS aims to minimize delays, eliminate bottlenecks, and reduce incidences of harassment often reported by commuters and traders along border routes.

Speaking on the development, the NCS emphasized its commitment to deploying advanced technology and intelligence-driven strategies to safeguard the country’s borders without compromising economic activities. Officials also assured the public that the reform will not weaken the agency’s efforts to curb smuggling and other illicit activities.

This policy shift aligns with ongoing initiatives by the federal government to improve ease of doing business in Nigeria and strengthen the nation’s economy. Stakeholders have lauded the move, describing it as a step in the right direction for fostering better trade relations within the region.

The Customs Service has urged citizens and traders to cooperate with its officers during the transition period, assuring them of enhanced operations and a more transparent system moving forward.
