FG Donates Four Hybrid CNG Buses to Boost Public Transport in FCT

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Thursday received four 50-seater hybrid buses from the Federal Government under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (PCNG) Initiative.

The donation, aimed at strengthening public transportation in Abuja, is part of the PCNG Initiative launched in 2023 to promote the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles in mass transit.

The programme seeks to drive cost savings, create jobs, enhance energy security, and support an eco-friendly transport system.

Receiving the buses on behalf of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Transport Secretariat, Chinedu Elechi, described the gesture as a welcome development that would complement ongoing efforts to modernise the city’s public transport network.

Elechi noted that the new buses would move over 200 passengers daily, helping to ease commuter movement across the capital. He stressed the minister’s belief that no modern city can thrive without a robust public transport system, adding that the initiative also supports tourism, as visitors often rely on public transportation.

“This is why the Minister has invested in roads, bridges, and modern bus terminals,” he said. “We have just commissioned two new terminals at Mabushi and Kugbo. These buses will be very helpful, and more are on the way.”

Presenting the buses, PCNGI Program Director/Chief Executive, Michael Oluwagbemi, said the donation was a reward for the FCTA’s strong support for the initiative and its investments in road infrastructure and transport terminals.

“This is a presidential initiative. Mr. President wants Nigerians to move around cheaper, safer, and more reliably,” Oluwagbemi stated. “We hope these buses will become key assets for the new terminals and a foundation for a stronger transport system in the FCT.”
