Man Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Foreigner’s N290,000 Aboard Ibom Air Flight

There was drama onboard an Ibom Air flight on Wednesday when aviation security officers arrested a male passenger for allegedly stealing N290,000 from a foreign national’s luggage stored in the aircraft’s overhead compartment.

The incident, which occurred before the Lagos-to-Abuja flight took off, caused a brief commotion before security personnel restored order. The suspect was subsequently deboarded and handed over to the police.

An eyewitness onboard the aircraft said the theft happened around 7:00 a.m. as passengers were finalising boarding. According to him, the foreign passenger raised an alarm after discovering that N290,000 in cash was missing from his bag.

Cabin crew members immediately began investigating, during which another passenger claimed to have seen a man tampering with the foreigner’s bag. The suspect, however, denied any involvement.

Initially, a search of the man’s hand luggage yielded nothing, but further inspection following a body search revealed part of the missing cash hidden in his socks and the rest tucked beneath his seat.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, Ibom Air’s spokesperson, Annie Essienette, said the suspect was in police custody.

“Yes, the incident occurred, and the timely intervention of our crew and security operatives ensured calm was quickly restored. The suspect was handed over to the police. However, the victim has chosen not to press charges, so the suspect may be released,” she stated.
