FCT: Policeman killed, scores injured in IMN clash with SF
violent clash between security forces and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shi’ite group, has resulted in the death of a police officer and the arrest of 19 individuals in Abuja.
The incident, which took place during a protest organized by the Shi’ite group, escalated into a confrontation with law enforcement officers.
According to police reports, the IMN members had gathered in the nation’s capital to demand the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and to protest alleged government oppression.
However, what began as a peaceful demonstration quickly turned violent when the protesters reportedly clashed with security personnel.
In the ensuing confrontation, a police officer was fatally injured, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Law enforcement authorities responded by arresting 19 members of the group, who are now in custody awaiting further investigation.
According to our corespondent, police spokesperson condemned the violence and reiterated the commitment of security agencies to maintaining law and order.
“While the right to protest is recognized, any demonstration that turns violent and leads to loss of lives or destruction of property will not be tolerated,” the spokesperson stated.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as security operatives attempted to disperse the protesters.
Tear gas was reportedly fired to control the crowd, and gunshots were heard as tensions escalated.
Commuters and residents in the area were caught in the disruption, leading to fears of further unrest.
In response to the clash, IMN leaders have accused security forces of using excessive force against their members.
They insist that their demonstration was peaceful and claim that the police provoked the violence.
The group has long been at odds with the Nigerian government, particularly over the detention of their leader, a conflict that has led to several deadly clashes in the past.
