Ibori-Seunu’s Move to APC Sparks Political Tensions in Delta
The recent defection of Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Seunu, representing Ethiope Federal Constituency in Delta State, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has set the stage for a heated political battle ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ibori-Seunu’s move has disrupted the long-standing rotation arrangement between Ethiope East and Ethiope West, which has historically ensured equitable representation in the House of Representatives under the PDP.
While she has yet to confirm plans to seek re-election, her defection has fueled speculation that she is positioning herself to secure the APC’s ticket for a second term.
The PDP in Ethiope East has vowed to reclaim the seat in 2027, insisting that it is their turn based on the rotational agreement. In a communique issued after a stakeholders’ meeting, the party stated:
“Ethiope East Local Government, the largest and most populous in the federal constituency, has only had eight years of representation compared to Ethiope West’s 20 years. For equity and fairness, Ethiope East must produce the representative in 2027.”
The defection has further weakened the PDP in Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s senatorial district, where the APC already holds significant sway. Ibori-Seunu joins a growing list of APC representatives in the area, including Senator Ede Dafinone and House members Francis Waive and Etanabene Benedict.
Interestingly, Ibori-Seunu’s defection comes against the backdrop of her father, Chief James Ibori—a founding PDP member and former Delta governor—maintaining a low profile within the party.
While Ibori has not commented on his daughter’s political move, some speculate that his influence and ties with President Bola Tinubu of the APC could indirectly shape her political route.

The PDP has taken steps to counter the defection, directing ward chairmen to replace defectors in party positions and filing a suit at the Federal High Court in Warri to declare Ibori-Seunu’s seat vacant.
As the 2027 elections approach, the battle for Ethiope Federal Constituency is shaping up to be a fierce contest, with money, party loyalty, and political alliances expected to play pivotal roles. Whether Ibori-Seunu’s gamble pays off or the PDP reclaims its stronghold remains to be seen, but as some have noted, “In politics, it’s never over until it’s over.”
