Kano Anti-Graft Agency Uncovers 16,800 Bags of Palliative Rice Re-branded for Sale
The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has uncovered a staggering 16,800 bags of 50kg rice intended as palliatives, which were allegedly re-branded and prepared for sale. The discovery was made during an ongoing investigation into the diversion of relief materials meant to cushion the effects of economic hardships on vulnerable residents of the state.
According to the agency, the rice, which was part of the Federal Government’s palliative program, was stored in a warehouse and relabeled with the intent to sell it commercially. The operation was exposed following a tip-off from concerned members of the public.
Chairman of the anti-graft commission, Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, described the incident as a betrayal of public trust. He assured citizens that the commission is committed to ensuring accountability and justice. “We will not allow those entrusted with public resources to exploit the poor. This act undermines efforts to alleviate the suffering of the people,” Rimingado stated.
The agency has commenced investigations to identify those behind the scheme and their accomplices. The rice has since been seized and secured as evidence, with plans underway to redistribute it to the intended beneficiaries.
This revelation comes amidst growing concerns over the management of palliative distribution across Nigeria, with accusations of hoarding and diversion becoming increasingly common. Citizens and civil society organizations have called for more transparency and stricter oversight to prevent such misconduct in the future.
The Kano State government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that relief materials reach those in need, pledging full support for the anti-corruption commission’s efforts.
