Abuja, Nigeria – A tragic incident occurred on Monday, March 24, 2025, at the Gwagwa-Idu train station in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where a woman lost her life after being struck by an oncoming train. The circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear, prompting an immediate investigation by the authorities.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim was seen near the railway tracks before the approaching train, but it remains uncertain whether she was attempting to cross or was unaware of the train’s proximity. The impact of the collision left her with severe injuries, and she was found unconscious at the scene. Police officers who arrived at the location discovered her lying on the tracks behind Zeberced Company.
Emergency responders rushed her to the Kubwa General Hospital, but despite efforts to save her, doctors confirmed her death upon arrival. As of now, the woman’s identity remains unknown, and authorities are working to contact her family members.
The FCT Police Command has launched an official probe into the incident, urging residents to exercise caution when near railway crossings. “We are investigating the circumstances that led to this unfortunate accident. We also advise the public to be vigilant and avoid unauthorized crossings on train tracks,” a police spokesperson stated.
This is not the first railway accident in Abuja. In December 2022, a woman was similarly killed when her car was struck by a train in the Chikakore area of Kubwa. That incident sparked concerns about railway safety, with calls for stricter enforcement of safety measures at railway crossings.
Authorities continue to urge pedestrians and motorists to adhere to railway safety rules to prevent further tragedies. Meanwhile, the investigation into the Gwagwa-Idu train station incident remains ongoing as police seek to determine whether negligence, misjudgment, or other factors contributed to the fatal accident.
