Activist apprehended after appearing in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu.
Armed policemen on Thursday arrested activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja shortly after he appeared in court to show support for detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore, who has consistently advocated for Kanu’s release, was taken away by operatives who said they were acting on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.
According to eyewitnesses, Sowore questioned the officers about the reason for his arrest and demanded a formal invitation letter, insisting that his lawyer must accompany him before he was eventually driven off in a police van.
Confirming the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter), human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong condemned the arrest, describing it as “preposterous” and a violation of judicial integrity.
He wrote, “The arrest of Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court in Abuja moments ago is preposterous. The police and the Tinubu regime are making a mockery of our judicial system. He should be freed immediately. Stop the shenanigans.”
Sowore’s arrest comes three days after he led a #FreeNnamdiKanuprotest in Abuja, where several demonstrators — including Kanu’s lawyer Aloy Ejimakor and his brother Emmanuel Kanu — were arrested and later remanded at Kuje Prison.
The police, in their First Information Report before a Kuje Magistrates’ Court, accused the protesters of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance and breach of public peace, citing their defiance of a court order and disruption of traffic.
The defendants are expected to take their plea on Friday, as tension mounts over Sowore’s arrest and broader concerns about civic freedoms under the current administration.
