Truck Crushes 3 Siblings on Their Way to School, 4 Others Killed in Separate Crash

A dark cloud hung over Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday as two separate road accidents claimed the lives of seven people, including three young siblings.

The first tragic incident occurred along the Celica Kukumoda axis of the Ife/Ibadan Expressway, where a truck reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into the children as they were on their way to school. The truck, said to be loaded with goods, crushed all three siblings to death on the spot.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials later moved the victims’ remains to a nearby hospital.

In a separate crash at Idi-Ori along the Oyo Expressway, four more people lost their lives in an accident involving two commercial vehicles. Several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

An eyewitness at the second crash said the cause was not immediately known. However, another witness, Adekunle Adeleke, gave some insight into what transpired:

“The accident involved two commercial vehicles. One Volve (Yellow colour) while the second vehicle is DAF truck.

“The causes of the incident was obstruction. The accident involved six persons. Four confirmed dead immediately while two other persons who sustained varying degree of injuries were taken to the UCH for treatment.”

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Oyo State, Rosemary Alo, confirmed the tragic events and noted that police officers were first responders at the Idi-Ori crash due to its proximity to their post.

“The Police carried out the rescue as the crash happened close to their office.

“The corpses were taken to UCH by the Police while accident vehicles causing obstruction have been cleared off the road.

“Men of RS11.39 Moniya are on ground controlling traffic at the scene.”

The tragic accidents have once again raised concerns about road safety and enforcement of vehicle maintenance standards on Nigerian highways.
