Police Question Officer for Assaulting Uber Driver in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has interrogated one of its officers, Inspector Obic Modestus, following his arrest for assaulting an Uber driver in the Ketu area.
The incident, which has drawn widespread attention after a video went viral online, showed Modestus physically attacking the yet-to-be-identified driver during a stop-and-search operation.
The officer reportedly became enraged when the driver attempted to record the interaction.
A passenger captured the altercation, which showed Modestus dragging the driver from his vehicle, confiscating his phone, and continuing the assault in the presence of fellow officers.
Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed Modestus’s arrest via a post on X.com on Monday.
He revealed that the officer was summoned by the Complaint Response Unit and would be transferred to the Provost Department for disciplinary action.
Hundeyin emphasized that the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Olohundare Jimoh, has zero tolerance for police misconduct and emphasized that public mistreatment by officers would not be tolerated.
“The Police Officer, Inspector Obic Modestus, has been summoned by the Complaint Response Unit.
He will be handed over to the Provost Department for appropriate disciplinary measures.
The Lagos State Police Command, under CP Olohundare Jimoh, will not condone any form of incivility to members of the public,” Hundeyin stated.

Reacting to the incident, Azeez Jaiyesinmi, Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria, condemned the officer’s behavior, describing it as a reflection of the abuse and extortion drivers often face.
“This is very bad, and that’s what our members have turned to in the hands of the police—assaulted just because they want to extort him,” he wrote.
