Student Protest Turns Violent: MAPOLY Students Clash with Ogun Deputy Governor’s Convoy

A peaceful protest by students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, turned violent on Wednesday as they clashed with the convoy of Ogun State’s Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele.

The incident occurred as Salako-Oyedele was en route to the 35 Artillery Brigade Alabama, Abeokuta, to represent Governor Dapo Abiodun at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations. According to reports, students allegedly damaged vehicles in the deputy governor’s convoy and injured security personnel while attempting to block the road.

Confirming the incident, Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, described the students as “irate” and armed with sticks and projectiles.

“Despite efforts by security operatives to calm the situation and allow the convoy to pass peacefully, the students became agitated upon realizing it was the deputy governor’s convoy,” Akinmade said in a statement.

He added that the deputy governor was forced to reroute to her lodge to avoid further confrontation before proceeding to the event.

In response, Adeyanju Francis, Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun JCC, refuted claims that students initiated the violence. Francis alleged that police accompanying the deputy governor fired shots at the students unprovoked.

“We were peacefully expressing our grievances when the deputy governor’s convoy intercepted us. Contrary to claims, none of our students attacked her convoy,” Francis stated, accusing the deputy governor’s security detail of injuring students.

The clash has heightened tensions between the state government and MAPOLY students, highlighting ongoing discontent and demands within the academic community.
