Plateau State Gets New Speaker as Nanloong Daniel Takes Over from Dewan

In a swift political transition, the Plateau State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Nanloong Daniel as its new Speaker following the resignation of Hon. Gabriel Dewan.

Daniel, who represents Mikang State Constituency and served as the Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly, was unanimously chosen by fellow lawmakers during an emergency sitting held Wednesday at the Assembly’s temporary chambers within the Old Government House in Jos.

The session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Hon. Gwotta Ajang and came on the heels of a high-level closed-door meeting involving Governor Caleb Mutfwang, outgoing Speaker Dewan, and other key lawmakers. The meeting was reportedly aimed at calming growing political tensions in the state.

Dewan, the only lawmaker elected on the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 24-member House, voluntarily stepped down in what observers believe was part of a broader peace arrangement to restore stability to Plateau’s political environment.

His resignation cleared the path for Daniel’s emergence as a consensus candidate, signaling a new phase for the Assembly’s leadership.

The House is expected to reconvene in the coming days to address pressing legislative matters and resume its governance responsibilities.
