Tanker Crash Claims Life of Conductor in Anambra

A tragic accident involving a petrol-laden tanker has claimed the life of a conductor in Umuike Echem community, Nnobi, near Nnokwa Junction in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The incident occurred on Sunday.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)-laden tanker lost control while attempting to navigate a sharp bend, causing the vehicle to crash into a perimeter fence.

As a result, the tanker overturned and began leaking fuel, raising fears of a potential explosion.

“There were two people in the vehicle — the driver and a conductor,” an eyewitness recounted. “The conductor fell from the tanker during the crash and died instantly, while the driver sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.”

Prompt response from the Anambra State Fire Service prevented a major disaster. Firefighters arrived quickly at the scene and carried out a cooling operation to avert an explosion.

They also successfully transferred the remaining petrol to another tanker.

When our correspondent visited the site on Monday, fire officials had cordoned off the area to prevent access by pedestrians and motorists, ensuring safety in the aftermath of the incident.

In a press release, the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service confirmed the incident.

The statement, signed by State Fire Chief Chukwudi Chiketa, noted that a distress call was received at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Two teams of firemen from different stations, along with two fire trucks and other firefighting equipment, were deployed to the location.

“The PMS-laden truck lost control and crashed into a perimeter wall while navigating a sharp bend,” Chiketa said. “Our crews, led by PFS Dike, acted swiftly to contain the situation and prevent a fire outbreak.

The remaining product was safely transloaded into another truck.”

Chiketa extended his condolences to the family of the deceased conductor, the injured driver, and all affected by the incident.
