Teenage Boy in Kwara Arrested for Fatal Stabbing of Mother’s Co-Wife
A woman identified as Mrs Falilat Yusuf, popularly known as Iya Ganiyat, has allegedly been stabbed to death by a 17-year-old boy identified as Malik in the Danialu area of Gaa Akanbi, Ilorin, Kwara State.
The incident occurred around 2pm on Friday, as residents described the attack as brutal and unprovoked, with many still struggling to come to terms with the killing.
The spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the arrest of the suspect saying he was apprehended after concerned residents raised the alarm and were on the verge of lynching him before the police arrived.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect allegedly stormed the home of the deceased, his stepmother and stabbed her multiple times in the neck, leaving her in a pool of blood before fleeing the scene.
Speaking to a radio medium, Sobi FM, a resident said, “Malik, who lives in a separate apartment rented by their shared husband, had been previously warned to stay away from the compound following a series of alleged thefts.”
One of the deceased’s sons, Teslim, recounted the moment he discovered his mother’s body.
“I saw Malik near our compound that afternoon, making some strange hand gestures. Immediately our eyes met, he fled. When I went inside, I found my mother lying lifeless in her own blood. I screamed for help,” he said.
He added that the suspect returned moments later wearing a different outfit but still had traces of blood on his shoes, prompting neighbours to apprehend him and hand him over to the police.
Eyewitnesses also alleged that Malik confessed to the crime, claiming he had issues with the deceased.
The deceased was buried over the weekend in line with Islamic rites.
The police say investigations are ongoing, and the suspect remains in custody.
