Tensions Flare in Bayelsa as Gunshots Disrupt Pro-Wike Political Rally
YENAGOA, BAYELSA STATE – A political rally organized by a group aligned with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike was thrown into chaos on Saturday after gunshots erupted near the event venue, sparking panic among attendees and residents.
The rally, coordinated by George Turnah, a prominent figure in the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was underway in Yenagoa when the disturbance began. According to witnesses and reports confirmed by FCN News, armed individuals fired shots into the air near the gathering, causing crowds to scatter temporarily.
Local sources described scenes of confusion as attendees and bystanders fled for safety. However, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, Secretary of the organizing group NEW Associates, later assured journalists that calm had been restored. “The situation is under control, and the rally will proceed as planned,” Ekerefe stated, dismissing concerns about further disruptions.
Supporters gradually regrouped following the incident, with organizers vowing to continue mobilizing political support in the state. The motive behind the gunfire remains unclear, and authorities have yet to comment on whether arrests were made.
The event, perceived as part of ongoing efforts to bolster Wike’s influence in Bayelsa, highlights simmering political tensions in the region. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
FCN News will provide updates as more details emerge.
