The Only primary Health Care Centre in Miango (Basa), Plateau state,is Falling Apart,Lifeline for over 15,000 People

Miango’s Only Health Centre Crumbles Amid Neglect Residents Fear Collapse, Demand Urgent Action

The only accessible primary healthcare facility in Miango, Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, is in a state so dire it barely qualifies as a health centre—despite years of budgetary allocations meant to maintain and improve such institutions.

Serving over 15,000 residents, the Miango Primary Health Centre (PHC) is the community’s sole option for maternal care, immunizations, emergency services, and basic treatments. Yet today, the centre is a shadow of what a healthcare facility should be: collapsing walls, leaking roofs, broken equipment, no running water or electricity, and a chronic shortage of essential drugs.

For pregnant women and sick children, this means life-threatening delays and dangerous conditions. “Women give birth on the floor. We refer patients to far away hospitals because we have no tools, no power, no staff,” said one health worker at the centre, who asked to remain anonymous.

This alarming decline comes despite regular annual funding to the Plateau State Primary Health Care Development Board, supplemented by federal allocations and international health support. Local advocacy groups and community leaders point to Miango PHC as a painful example of failed governance, poor implementation, and neglect of rural communities.

“Miango PHC is not just deteriorating—it’s disappearing. It’s the only lifeline we have,” said Esther Jirbo, a mother of four and local activist. “If it collapses, people will die needlessly. The government must act now.”

For five years, promises from local and state officials have yielded no visible improvements. Health workers remain unpaid, equipment is missing or broken, and appeals from the community have been ignored.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Bassa LGA, alongside civil society groups, is calling for a full audit of healthcare funding and immediate renovation of the Miango PHC.

With the rainy season fast approaching, fears mount that the already crumbling structure could give way entirely, leaving a population without any health support. Repeated attempts to reach the Plateau State Primary Health Care Development Board for comment were unsuccessful.
