“They Set Me on Fire” – The Agony of 14-Year-Old Bashariya, Betrayed by the Privileged, Crying for Justice

Kindly share this story

Her name is Bashariya. She’s just 14.
She should be sitting in a classroom, surrounded by laughter and learning free to dream.
But instead, she lies wounded, scarred by cruelty too dark for words.

Bashariya was born in Zamfara State. Her family fled their home after brutal bandit raids, desperate to survive. They found temporary refuge in an IDP camp near Gwiwa Eka, Sokoto, believing they’d escaped the worst.

They were wrong.

A woman named Fauziya, wife of Sokoto State Judge Barrister Abbakar Zaki, came to the camp. She promised a better life for Basharia offering to take her in as a house help.

But behind the promises was a prison.

Bashariya was not cared for she was starved, beaten, and finally, burned.
Yes, burned with fire.

Neighbors eventually found her—her body covered in wounds, her voice barely above a whisper, her spirit almost gone.

Her father, trembling, repeated the chilling words Fauziya told him:
“You and the police can do nothing. Only God can judge me.”

With those words, she hid behind her husband’s power and her own cruelty, believing she was untouchable.

But this time, Nigeria must say no more.

This is not just another story of abuse.
This is the torture of a child.

We demand action from the Inspector General of Police, the Human Rights Commission, the Ministry of Women Affairs, and every leader who claims to serve justice.

🔴 JUSTICE FOR BASHARIYA 🔴

She is not invisible.
She is not disposable.
She is not alone.

We will speak.
We will rise.
We will fight for her—until every wound is answered with truth, accountability, and justice.
