Three Dead, 19 Rescued in Rivers State Boat Tragedy

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of two adults and a toddler in a tragic boat mishap on Sunday evening. SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, revealed on Tuesday in Port Harcourt that 19 passengers were rescued from the ill-fated boat, which capsized due to a sudden ocean storm while en route from Port Harcourt to Bonny Island in Bonny Local Government Area (LGA).

“There were 22 passengers on board the ill-fated boat, but unfortunately, three individuals lost their lives. The bodies of the three victims, including a young girl, have been recovered,” Iringe-Koko said, adding that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. The accident reportedly occurred near the Yellow Platform close to Bonny Island.

Anengi Claude-Wilcox, Chairman of Bonny Local Government Council, also addressed the incident through a statement by the Council Secretary, John Gabriel-Pepple. He explained that a preliminary investigation revealed the boat’s captain lost control after encountering a sudden oceanic storm.

“The incident claimed the lives of two adults and a toddler, while 19 survivors were immediately taken to the hospital at the expense of the Bonny Council. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families, friends, and loved ones,” Claude-Wilcox stated.

The council chairman further disclosed that another passenger boat reportedly refused to assist in the rescue efforts. “Information reaching the council indicates that the passenger boat refused to assist in rescue efforts while the passengers from the capsized boat struggled to survive at sea. We call on anyone with useful information about the driver of that boat to contact the council secretary,” he added.

Claude-Wilcox urged travellers and boat operators to prioritize safety by adhering to all necessary protocols to prevent such tragedies. The incident underscores the importance of caution and preparedness when navigating waterways in storm-prone regions.
