Tinubu Confers National Honours on Kudirat Abiola, Wole Soyinka, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Others

President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on several prominent Nigerians, both living and posthumously, as part of the Democracy Day celebrations.

The announcement was made during his State of the Nation address at the National Assembly on Thursday.

Among the honorees is the late Kudirat Abiola, awarded the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) title posthumously. Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka received the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), one of the highest national honours.

Also honoured posthumously were Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and other members of the Ogoni Nine. President Tinubu announced that he would exercise his prerogative of mercy to grant full pardons to these individuals, with additional names to be announced in collaboration with the National Council of State.

President Tinubu emphasized the significance of these recognitions, describing the honorees as “national heroes” and acknowledging their sacrifices in the struggle for democracy and social justice in Nigeria.
