Tinubu Makes History, Appoints Olugbemisola Odusote as First Female Director-General of Nigerian Law School
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, marking a historic first for the institution established in 1962.
The appointment was announced on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, Odusote’s four-year tenure will commence on January 10, 2026.
At 54, Odusote currently serves as the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School. Her elevation makes her the first woman to lead the institution since its inception more than six decades ago.
She will take over from Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose eight-year tenure as Director-General comes to an end on January 9, 2026.
Odusote earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. She also obtained a Master of Laws degree from the same institution, with a specialization in company and commercial law. She later bagged a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, with academic interests focused on Public Law and the administration of justice.
Her career at the Nigerian Law School began in 2001 when she joined as a lecturer. Over the years, she has held several key positions, including Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics and Head of Campus. She also spent time as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University in the UK.
In addition to her teaching and administrative roles, Odusote has published widely in reputable local and international law journals and has presented papers at various legal education conferences. She has also served on committees of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association.
As Director-General, Odusote will oversee the academic leadership, administrative coordination and strategic direction of the Nigerian Law School across all its campuses. She will also act as the main link between the institution, the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers and the Nigerian Bar Association.
