Tinubu Mourns Former Oyo Governor Olunloyo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sadness at the passing of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, the former governor of the old Oyo State and one of Nigeria’s most esteemed intellectuals and public servants.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Olunloyo family as well as to the government and citizens of Oyo State.
He honored the late elder statesman as “a brilliant mind, a patriotic leader, and a dedicated nation-builder.”
Dr. Olunloyo distinguished himself with his academic excellence, earning a PhD in applied mathematics and number theory from St. Andrews University in Scotland at just 25 years old.
By the age of 27, he had already taken on the role of commissioner in the old Western Region, highlighting his remarkable commitment to service in both education and governance.
In his tribute, President Tinubu lauded Dr. Olunloyo’s significant academic and professional contributions, particularly his pioneering efforts as the founding rector of both The Polytechnic Ibadan and the Kwara State Polytechnic.
“Dr. Olunloyo will be celebrated in academic circles for his brilliance and foundational contributions to applied mathematics and number theory. As an educator, he had a lasting impact on future leaders and strengthened educational institutions,” President Tinubu remarked
Although Dr. Olunloyo’s tenure as governor of the old Oyo State was cut short by military intervention, President Tinubu praised his time in office as characterized by vision and integrity. “Despite the brevity of his term, his leadership was marked by exceptional foresight.
The sudden end to his administration did not prevent him from continuing to serve the nation,” he said.
Emphasizing Dr. Olunloyo’s commitment to nation-building and intellectual development, President Tinubu characterized him as a steadfast advocate for education as a means to transform the nation.
“His legacy in academia and public service will be studied and remembered for years to come,” he added.
