Yoruba Alfas, Imams boycott Sultan of Sokoto announce day of Ramadan cite references

A group of Imams and Alfas operating in southwest Nigeria have announced that Ramadan 1446 AH (2025) will commence on Saturday, March 1, 2025, deviating their practice from the age long practice of waiting for the official declaration by the revered Sultan of Sokoto, who is the overall spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims.
The decision was contained in a communiqué issued by the Office of the Grand Mufti of the League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland. The group of Imams and Alfa stated that its decision was based on taken following the astronomical calculations and international Islamic conferences on lunar sighting.
The communique pointed out some numerous resolutions from Islamic jurisprudential councils, astronomical experts, and international conferences held in Istanbul, Paris, and within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The communique explained that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan will be cited after sunset on Friday, February 28, 2025, making March 1, 2025, the first day of fasting.
