Tiv Students Evacuated from Obudu Amid Renewed Benue–Cross River Border Clashes
In response to renewed violent clashes along the Benue–Cross River border, authorities in Benue State have ordered the immediate evacuation of Tiv students studying in Obudu, Cross River State.
The evacuation followed reports of escalating tensions in the area, sparked by a long-standing land dispute between the Mbazerem community in Vandeikya Local Government Area (Benue) and the Andabonkep community in Obudu Local Government Area (Cross River). The conflict, which reignited on July 18, reached Obudu town over the weekend.
A man identified only as Agege, a native of Tsar in Benue’s Vandeikya LGA, was reportedly assaulted in Obudu. Unconfirmed reports suggest he may have been killed, although his body had not been recovered as of press time.
In a precautionary move to prevent potential reprisal attacks, the Chairman of Vandeikya LGA ordered the evacuation of Tiv students from the area. The operation was carried out without incident, with armed police escorts ensuring the students’ safe return to Benue.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the development, noting that security personnel have been deployed to stabilize the affected communities and avert further violence.
To address the growing tensions, Area Commanders from both Benue and Cross River States are expected to convene a high-level peace meeting. The dialogue will bring together local chiefs, community leaders, and senior police officials from Zones 4 and 6 to explore lasting solutions to the dispute.
Authorities are urging calm on both sides and reaffirmed their commitment to restoring peace and order along the volatile border corridor.
