Swift Action by Neighbors and Firefighters Saves Lives, But Who’s to Blame for the Repeated Fire Outbreaks

A residential building located in the Tanke area of Ilorin South Local Government, Kwara State, has been razed by fire almost claiming the lives of a nursing mother and her one-year-old child.
It was gathered that the incident, which occurred on Thursday, March 20, 2025, was caused by a power surge.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the woman and her child were deep in sleep when the house began filling with smoke. A vigilant resident, Mr. Owolabi, noticed the smoke and immediately raised the alarm, rallying neighbors to the scene.
He also placed a distress call to the Kwara State Fire Service, which promptly responded to the emergency at No. 8 Aiyegbede Street, Awolowo, Tanke.

Upon arrival, the fire crew swiftly tackled the flames, preventing the inferno from spreading beyond the sitting room of the two-bedroom flat. Despite significant damage to furniture, electronics, and decorations in the sitting and dining areas, no lives were lost.
Expressing sympathy for the affected residents, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, emphasized the need for heightened fire safety awareness in homes and commercial spaces.
He commended the community for their prompt action in aiding the victims and urged the public to remain vigilant against such emergencies.
It was also learnt that the incident raises serious concerns about recurring power surges and fire outbreaks in the area, prompting questions about the reliability of electrical infrastructure and safety measures in residential neighborhoods.
