Unity Cup: Dessers Scores as Super Eagles Defeat Ghana 2-1 in London

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a 2-1 victory over the Black Stars of Ghana in the semifinal of the Unity Cup, held Wednesday night at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.

Cyriel Dessers gave Nigeria an early lead in the 14th minute, converting a pass from S. Ismail with a composed finish. Just five minutes later, the Super Eagles doubled their advantage when Ghana’s Razak Simpson inadvertently put the ball into his own net.

The Black Stars struggled to respond, failing to register a single shot on target in the first half.

Their frustrations mounted as Kamaradini Mamudu and Salis Abdul Samed received yellow cards in quick succession for reckless tackles in the 24th and 26th minutes.

Ghana found a lifeline in the 70th minute when substitute Brandon Asante-Thomas pulled a goal back, but it proved too little, too late.

Elsewhere, Jamaica edged Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 on Tuesday, earning a place in the final.

Ahead of the clash, Ghana’s head coach Otto Addo had underlined the match’s importance, calling it “an opportunity to restore pride, fuel the passion of the fans, and remind the continent that the Black Stars are still a force to reckon with.”

The Unity Cup is a friendly international tournament designed to foster unity among nations with shared historical and cultural roots, particularly across Africa and the diaspora.
