University of Abuja Security Personnel Arrest Channels TV Crew, Damage Equipment Amid Controversy Over VC Appointment

In a dramatic turn of events, security personnel at the University of Abuja reportedly detained a Channels Television crew and damaged their equipment amid allegations of plans to impose Dr. Aisha Maikudi as the institution’s new Vice-Chancellor. The incident, which occurred earlier today, has sparked outrage and raised questions about press freedom and transparency in university governance.

Eyewitnesses claim the Channels TV crew was on campus to cover growing tensions surrounding the selection process for the Vice-Chancellor position. Reports indicate that the university’s governing body is facing accusations of sidelining due process to favor Dr. Maikudi, a controversial candidate. Critics argue that her appointment is being orchestrated by powerful interests within and outside the institution.

The journalists were allegedly accosted by university security while conducting interviews with concerned students and staff. Their camera equipment was reportedly seized and damaged during the altercation. Witnesses also reported that the crew was briefly held against their will before being released following the intervention of senior university officials.

Speaking to the press, a member of the detained crew described the experience as “intimidating and a blatant attack on press freedom.” Meanwhile, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the act, calling for an immediate investigation and the protection of journalists covering sensitive issues.

The University of Abuja management has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or the allegations surrounding the Vice-Chancellor appointment process. However, students and staff have called for transparency and adherence to established procedures to ensure the credibility of the institution.

This incident underscores the growing tension over leadership in one of Nigeria’s premier institutions, with stakeholders demanding accountability and fairness. The university community and the nation await further developments on this unfolding story.
