Groom, friends apprehended for bride’s death in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended a groom and three of his friends for allegedly coercing the bride into non-consensual sexual activity, which is believed to have resulted in her death.

The incident reportedly took place on April 26, 2025, around 10 PM.

According to SP Shi’isu Adam, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, the individuals involved have been identified as Auwal Abdulwahab, 20, the groom, along with his friends Nura Basiru, 20, Muttaka Lawan, 20, and Hamisu Musa, 20, all hailing from Tungo village.

They have been taken into custody for a thorough investigation.

Police were notified promptly after the incident, and a team led by the Divisional Police Officer was dispatched to the scene.

It has been indicated that the bride’s death may be linked to the alleged coercion by her husband and his companions, especially as she had reportedly expressed her disagreement with her husband regarding marital relations shortly after their wedding.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Abdullahi, has instructed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for an extensive inquiry.

SP Adam stated that once the investigation is complete, the suspects will face appropriate legal actions.

The deceased’s body has been moved to Gumel General Hospital for a medical examination, where doctors confirmed her death before releasing the body to her parents for burial.

The suspects could potentially be charged with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide under the applicable laws of the jurisdiction.

The police emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice in this matter while urging parents to educate their children about the importance of respect in marital relationships.
