UPDATED: Delta Emerges Champion at 22nd National Sports Festival

Team Delta has claimed the overall victory at the 22nd National Sports Festival, known as the Gateway Games 2024, held in Ogun State.

The event, officially opened by President Bola Tinubu on May 18, saw Delta State secure the top spot with a commanding lead in the medal table.

Delta finished with an impressive haul of 109 gold, 75 silver, and 87 bronze medals.

Bayelsa State came second, while host state Ogun took third place. The 2025 edition of the festival will be hosted by Enugu State.

In celebration of the achievement, the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, dedicated the victory to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, describing it as a fitting tribute to mark his two years in office.

“This victory is for His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, whose unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and sports excellence through the MORE Agenda has brought us this far,” Oborevwori said.

He noted that although a few events were yet to conclude, Delta’s overwhelming lead already confirmed their position as the festival’s overall winner.

Oborevwori commended the athletes, coaches, and the entire Team Delta for their discipline, hard work, and dedication.

He attributed the state’s consistent success to strategic investments in sports and effective leadership.

“This is not just about medals; it’s about building lives and inspiring hope. The MORE Agenda has opened doors for our youths to thrive through sports, and this win is proof of what is possible when leadership meets action,” he added.
