Panic as Abuja–Kaduna train derails

A passenger train en route from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, sending several carriages off the tracks and sparking panic among commuters.

The incident occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11 a.m. Passengers were seen scrambling for safety as the derailed coaches tilted, with eyewitnesses describing the scene as “chaotic and frightening.”

One passenger told reporters “It was complete pandemonium. People who managed to get out were running in different directions. Everyone was terrified. We are only praying that all passengers make it out alive.”

Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the derailment in a telephone interview, noting that rescue efforts were ongoing at the scene.

“I don’t want to say much for now, but the incident is confirmed and rescue operations are underway,” he said.

As of press time, the cause of the derailment had not been determined, and no casualties had been officially reported.

The Abuja–Kaduna corridor remains one of Nigeria’s busiest rail routes, used by hundreds of passengers daily.

It has, however, been plagued by repeated disruptions, most notably the March 2022 terrorist attack in which several passengers were killed and dozens abducted.
