Veteran Nollywood Actor Chief Kanran Passes Away at 70

Veteran Nollywood star Olusegun Akinremi, widely known as Chief Kanran, has died at the age of 70.

The news was confirmed on Friday by movie producer Seun Oloketuyi in an Instagram post, stating that the actor passed away earlier in the day.

“Popular actor Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, died Friday morning. Details soon,” Oloketuyi wrote.

Chief Kanran was a celebrated figure in the Yoruba film industry, admired for his distinctive style, refined elegance, love for luxury, sharp wit, and commanding performances in both stage plays and films.

In a 2020 interview, he revealed why he stepped away from acting, citing politics and cliques within the industry.

“Some people see me as a threat because I won’t compromise professionalism,” he said at the time.

Starting his career on stage in 1975, Kanran played the title role in Kurunmi by Prof. Ola Rotimi and gained fame through Yoruba stage productions and the NTA drama series Mirror in the Sun.

His television career included roles in Images and the portrayal of Alaafin Kanran in a Lagos Television drama aired on October 1, 1988.

He was part of Nigeria’s drama entry Langbodo at Festac ’77 and starred in numerous Yoruba classics, including Ewe Orun, Aiye, Efunsetan Aniwura, Agbarin, and Bata Wahala.

Known for portraying kings, chiefs, and wealthy elders, he became a staple of Yoruba cinema for decades.

As of press time, the cause of death has not been disclosed, and the family is yet to announce funeral arrangements.
