The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has announced its outstanding achievements in 2024, including saving 30,890 lives and protecting property valued at ₦1.94 trillion from fire incidents and other emergencies nationwide.
FFS Controller General (CG), Abdulganiyu Jaji, disclosed these figures during the 2025 media briefing held at the service headquarters in Abuja on Friday.
Despite these successes, Jaji reported an estimated property loss of ₦67.1 billion and over 100 lives lost to various fire incidents during the year. He expressed condolences to the affected families and emphasized that many of these fires could have been avoided with proper safety measures.
The incidents included petrol tanker explosions, market fires, accidents at religious centers, fuel stations, and damage to both public and private properties. Jaji urged citizens, particularly operators of petrol and gas stations and gas cylinder users, to prioritize safety and invest in fire prevention tools such as fire extinguishers.

He highlighted the service’s plans to enhance fire safety awareness nationwide, stating:
“We will continue to advance our goals through robust strategies, operational efficiency, and proactive moves.
We will also focus on raising awareness, improve response time using cutting-edge technologies such as the National Fire Detection and Alarm System (NAFDAS) fire app, known as N-Alert.
Today, I reaffirm my commitment that the FFS will not falter in its mandate to ensure public trust in the safety of lives and property.”
Jaji called for the repeal and re-enactment of the outdated Fire Service Act of 1963 to reposition the service for better performance. He also revealed plans to establish more fire stations across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to improve response times.
The CG expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for supporting the service through the approval of modern firefighting equipment and the remodeling of the National Fire Academy in Sheda. He also acknowledged the support of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as part of the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
