A major political coalition meeting featuring prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party leader Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi was thrown into disarray following a disruption by delegates from Jigawa State.
The gathering, convened at the Abuja Continental Hotel under the auspices of the National Political Consultative Group (North), was intended to foster unity among opposition leaders. However, the session was abruptly interrupted when tensions flared over who should represent Jigawa State.
Trouble began when Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, introduced a delegate to speak for Jigawa. Several Jigawa attendees immediately objected, storming the stage and vehemently rejecting the appointed speaker.
Security forces, including members of the Nigerian Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and private security operatives, swiftly intervened to shield key political figures from the escalating commotion.
After minutes of heated exchanges and mediation efforts, order was eventually restored. A compromise was reached with the selection of Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, alongside another delegate, to represent the state moving forward.
The incident underscores the growing internal frictions within opposition ranks as efforts to forge a united front ahead of the next election cycle continue
