Lightning Kills 32 Cows During Heavy Rainfall in Ogun

No fewer than 32 cows were killed by lightning during a torrential downpour on Saturday in Osara, Obantoko area of Abeokuta, Odeda Local Government Area, Ogun State.

The Baale of Osara, Chief Wasiu Afolabi, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Sunday. According to him, the tragedy occurred around noon on Saturday during a severe thunderstorm.

He said the Fulani herders responsible for the cattle alerted him around 2 p.m. after discovering the dead animals.

“I was at home when the herders came to inform me that lightning had killed 32 of their cows,” Afolabi said. “I visited the site where they usually keep the cows before grazing and saw the carcasses. The matter has been reported to the Aregbe Police Division and to the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo.”

He added that a meeting had been scheduled with the herders to decide on the next steps and to ensure that the incident does not disrupt the peace of the community.

Confirming the report, Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo said in a WhatsApp message that the police were fully aware of the incident.

“The incident was reported to the Divisional Police Officer, Aregbe Division, at about 1:30 p.m. on June 21, 2025,” Ogunlowo said. “He led a team to the scene, where 32 cows were found dead, struck by lightning during the heavy rain.”
