We’ve Taken Bold, Proactive Steps to Secure Benue — State Government
The Benue State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling insecurity through a combination of strategic interventions and strengthened collaboration with security agencies.
Responding to recent criticisms from former Commissioner for Education, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, who accused Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration of failing to stem the tide of violence, the Special Adviser on Security and Internal Affairs, Joseph Har, said the state had taken “bold and proactive” steps to protect lives and property.
In a statement issued Tuesday in Makurdi, Har said Governor Alia had revitalized the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design strategy, which includes improved night visibility through solar lighting and removal of visual obstructions measures that have curbed vehicle and phone snatching incidents.
He also cited the Crime Prevention Through Social Development initiative, which addresses root causes of crime by offering jobs, skills training for youths, and improved amenities.
Har noted that the administration had strengthened the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, harmonized efforts with federal forces such as Operation Whirl Stroke, and reformed vigilante systems to improve intelligence gathering.
Traditional rulers, he said, have also been empowered to help police their communities, while modern surveillance systems, additional military deployments including a naval base and police squadrons have bolstered security in flashpoints like Guma, Agatu, Ukum, and Katsina-Ala.
“We’re not claiming perfection,” Har stated, “but the trajectory is clear, we are securing Benue with focus, determination, and sincerity of purpose.”
He challenged Prof. Ityavyar to provide any instance where the government failed to respond to attacks, noting the governor’s consistent engagement and intervention across affected communities.
