In a jaw-dropping verdict that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria, the Abia State High Court has sentenced former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to death by hanging after investigators uncovered a staggering ₦1 trillion stashed in a secret foreign account in Australia.

According to court documents, the funds were originally earmarked for the long-promised Abia International Airport and a state-of-the-art light rail project—developments that were meant to transform the state’s economy and infrastructure. Instead, prosecutors revealed the money was systematically siphoned and hidden overseas.

Delivering the historic judgment, Justice Chukwuemeka Nwogu declared:

“The evidence before this court is overwhelming. This was not just theft—it was the betrayal of millions of Abians who were denied progress and hope. Such crimes against humanity must carry the highest penalty.”

The judge further emphasized: “With ₦1 trillion, Abia could have had two airports, a modern rail system, and stable electricity. Instead, the state was left in decay. This sentence is not merely punishment, but a message that no one is above the law.”

“Gasps echoed through the courtroom as the sentence was pronounced. Outside, reactions were sharply divided some celebrated the judgment as a “historic victory for justice,” while others expressed shock at the sheer magnitude of both the alleged corruption and the severity of the punishment.

“Security agencies have confirmed that Ikpeazu is now under heavy guard as arrangements for the execution proceed. Meanwhile, international efforts are underway to repatriate the stolen funds, marking what analysts are calling one of the biggest anti-corruption crackdowns in Nigeria’s history.
