Worshippers at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Liberty Parish in the Somolu area of Lagos narrowly escaped death on Monday when a two-storey building under construction collapsed on the church premises.
According to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the incident occurred during the decking process of the building.
One of the structure’s pillars reportedly fell directly onto the church building located at 5 Craig Street.
“Upon arrival, the agency’s response team discovered that a two-storey building under construction had collapsed during the decking stage,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “Preliminary investigations by the Cobra Response Team revealed that the fallen structure was one of two buildings being constructed on the site.
The exact cause of the collapse has yet to be determined.”
Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries, as both construction workers and church worshippers managed to escape the scene unharmed before emergency responders arrived.
Search and rescue operations were conducted to ensure no one was trapped under the debris. Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that no victims were found and that the church building suffered only partial damage.

The agency also carried out public awareness activities at the site, advising residents and passersby to steer clear of the collapsed structure for safety reasons.
