NAF Partners with University to Boost Gender Mainstreaming and Training Initiatives

In a strategic move to advance gender inclusivity and enhance capacity building, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through its Directorate of Human Rights and Gender Affairs, has initiated a partnership with Benue State university to promote gender mainstreaming and specialized training programs.

The courtesy visit, which took place on Monday at the university’s campus, was led by Air Commodore E.P. Bindul, who emphasized the significance of collaboration between the military and academic institutions. He noted that the proposed partnership—specifically with the university’s Centre for Gender Studies—aims to align the NAF’s internal policies with national and global gender standards.

“We are committed to strengthening our internal structures by mainstreaming gender in our operations and we believe this partnership will support that goal,” said Air Commodore Bindul. “Beyond training, this collaboration symbolizes our dedication to national unity and strengthening civil-military relations.”

He further reiterated the Nigerian Air Force’s constitutional mandate to protect citizens, adding that building mutual trust between the military and civilians was crucial to tackling the nation’s security challenges.

Responding on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Mike Odugbo Odey, applauded the initiative and affirmed the university’s readiness to collaborate. He highlighted the institution’s commitment to providing the necessary support systems to ensure the success of the partnership.

“The university has a long-standing relationship with the Tactical Air Command in Makurdi,” Professor Odey stated. “We are proud to expand this collaboration to new frontiers, particularly in the area of gender development.”

Professor Member George-Genyi, Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, expressed her appreciation for the recognition and trust shown by the Nigerian Air Force. She assured the visiting delegation that the Centre would put in the needed effort to actualize the shared goals.

The visit marks a significant step toward institutionalizing gender-sensitive policies within the armed forces, as well as fostering knowledge exchange between military and academic institutions.
