Young Boy Dies as Residents Cry for Urgent Road Fix in Lokoja, Kogi State
Lokoja, Kogi State – Tragedy struck in Zango Daji community of Lokoja Local Government Area as a young boy lost his life to the worsening erosion site along Zone 12/Area 4, Unit 8, after Power Line. The gully, which has been expanding rapidly over the years, has now become a death trap for residents, cutting off movement, threatening homes, and endangering lives.
Residents of the affected community expressed deep concern, describing the erosion as a disaster waiting to claim more lives if urgent action is not taken. According to them, what once started as a small water channel has now developed into a massive gully that swallows farmlands, access roads, and puts families at constant risk.
“The situation becomes unbearable during the rainy season. Crossing this road is now like walking into danger, especially for our children,” a resident lamented.
The road in question is not just an access route between Zone 12 and Area 4 communities; it also leads to the Zango burial ground, making it an essential link for daily life. Sadly, it has now turned into a deadly path, underscored by the recent loss of a young boy’s life.
The community is calling on the Kogi State Government, the Federal Ministry of Environment, Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), NGOs, and well-meaning individuals to intervene immediately. They are appealing for urgent erosion control measures such as proper channelization, drainage systems, and embankment reinforcements.
“This is not just about saving our road; it is about saving our children and the future of our community. Every day we wait, the gully deepens and the danger increases,” the residents cried.
The people of Zango Daji say their plea is not only for development but for survival, urging authorities to act before more lives and properties are lost.
