NLC: Peter Obi Capable of Winning 2027 Election Without PDP Coalition

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asserted that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, possesses the ability to secure victory in the 2027 presidential election without forming a coalition with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or seeking support from prominent politicians such as Atiku Abubakar or Nasir El-Rufai.

In an exclusive interview, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, highlighted Obi’s substantial popularity and credibility as key factors that position him as a formidable rival against President Bola Tinubu, contingent upon a free and fair electoral process.

Ndubuaku rejected the notion of Obi rejoining the PDP, labeling the party a “crisis-ridden and nearly empty platform.” He stated, “Peter Obi does not require any coalition to win the 2027 presidential election. He is a highly marketable candidate.

Recall that he was on the path to victory in the 2023 elections until the controversial disruptions occurred.

He even managed to defeat Tinubu in his own stronghold of Lagos, demonstrating that the populace desires his leadership.”

He further asserted, “As long as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducts a transparent election, Obi will triumph. He can also utilize his extensive local and international connections to facilitate this outcome.”

This declaration aligns with the Obidients Movement’s commitment to support Obi, irrespective of the platform he chooses for the 2027 election.

Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the movement, stressed the urgent need for national reform and positioned Obi as the only candidate capable of tackling the country’s pressing economic issues.

Ndubuaku echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Obi’s broad acceptance across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and warning against a return to the PDP. “No serious candidate would consider the PDP a viable option at this stage,” he remarked.

“Obi is a disciplined individual. If there are suggestions for him to return to the PDP, I ask on what basis? One should compare the challenges facing the PDP with those of the Labour Party.

While LP’s crisis — primarily involving Julius Abure — has been resolved by the Supreme Court, the PDP continues to struggle with multiple crises.

Transitioning from LP to PDP would be akin to jumping from the frying pan into the fire.”

Addressing concerns regarding zoning and power rotation, Ndubuaku maintained that Obi’s proven track record surpasses such considerations.

“Some individuals may worry that if Obi wins, he might take the full eight-year term, potentially disrupting the zoning equilibrium in the North.

However, we understand that Obi doesn’t require two full terms to revive Nigeria. He is not power-hungry,” Ndubuaku concluded.
