As the political crisis in Rivers State continues to intensify, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, is reportedly making fresh political moves by seeking an alliance with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to counter the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the current leader of the party in the state.

Following what sources describe as an unsuccessful attempt to influence President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support his position, Wike is said to be shifting focus by repositioning his “Rainbow Structure” toward the SDP. This move is believed to be a contingency plan in the event that the APC governorship ticket in Rivers State is officially handed to Governor Fubara.

This development comes after the APC National leadership reportedly resolved to transfer control of the Rivers State APC structure to Governor Fubara following his alleged defection to the party.

Reports further indicate that the FCT Minister, who is currently outside the country, is holding talks with the national leadership of the SDP to conclude arrangements for the merger of his political supporters into the party. The meeting, said to have been facilitated by former SDP governorship candidate Magnus Abe, allegedly included the party’s National Chairman and other members of its National Working Committee.

Insiders claim the move is aimed at enabling Wike to sponsor candidates for the House of Assembly and the governorship election in Rivers State, in line with his long-standing ambition to remove Governor Fubara from office. This strategy reportedly followed directives from the APC leadership asking the FCT Minister to disengage from party activities in the state.

Political observers believe this sudden shift is a last-minute effort by Wike and his loyalists to avoid political irrelevance, as all attempts to prevent the governor from assuming full control of the party structure have so far proven unsuccessful. The reported move to the SDP is therefore seen as a way to remain politically active and contest upcoming elections in the state.
