574 Schools banned from 2025 Exams Over Malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has withdrawn the licenses of 574 secondary schools found guilty of involvement in examination malpractice.
This announcement was made by the Head of WAEC’s National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, during a press briefing held at the Council’s headquarters in Lagos on Thursday.
According to Dr. Dangut, the affected schools will not be permitted to host the forthcoming 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
“We have submitted the list of 574 schools whose recognition has been withdrawn to the federal government,” Dangut stated. “These schools are no longer recognized as examination centers, and WAEC will not conduct examinations there.”
He emphasized that this measure aligns with similar actions being taken by other examination bodies in the country.
The 2025 WASSCE will run from April 24 to June 20, 2025. A total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have registered for the exam. Of this number, 979,228 are male and 994,025 are female, indicating a growth of 158,627 candidates compared to the previous year.
In a bid to enhance exam integrity and service delivery, WAEC has introduced its first-ever Computer-Based WASSCE (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates.
“As an organization committed to deploying modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve service delivery, WAEC is launching the CB-WASSCE in 2025,” said Dangut.
Additionally, the West African Examinations Council is implementing a new strategy to discourage cheating: no two candidates will receive the same set of questions in each section of the exam.
“This innovative approach applies to certain WASSCE subject codes and aims to maintain the academic and moral standards set out by the National Policy on Education and the Federal Ministry of Education,” he explained.

Dr. Dangut also addressed concerns about security during the examination period. He assured that WAEC is working closely with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to ensure the safety of candidates and staff throughout the exam.
