Abuja Police Commissioner Orders Arrest of Woman Over Alleged Child Abuse

The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Adewale Ajao, has ordered the immediate arrest of a woman accused of abusing a 14-year-old girl in Abuja.
The directive follows the circulation of a disturbing video online, in which the teenage girl, identified as Bashariya, recounts her harrowing experience in Hausa. The video, monitored on Monday, shows the girl with visible injuries, alleging that she had been starved, beaten, and even burnt by the woman she worked for.
Bashariya, originally from Zamfara State, was taken to Abuja after her family fled their hometown due to repeated bandit attacks.
They eventually settled in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in the Gwiwa Eka area. According to the teenager, she was employed as a maid with promises of a better life, but instead suffered severe abuse.
The video sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for immediate action and justice for the girl.
Speaking on the matter, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the Commissioner had taken prompt action upon seeing the footage.
“Although the incident wasn’t initially reported to the police, CP Adewale Ajao has instructed all Divisional Police Officers in the FCT to identify and arrest the woman responsible without delay,” Adeh said.
She stressed the Commissioner’s firm stance against child abuse, saying, “Anyone who cannot properly care for a child should not take on such responsibility. No child should be subjected to such inhumane treatment.”

Adeh also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected abuse to the authorities.
“If you see something, say something. We all have a role to play in protecting the children in our communities,” she added.
