Aisha Yesufu Urges ADC Coalition to Elevate Youths, Women in Leadership

Prominent socio-political activist Aisha Yesufu has called on the newly launched African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition to ensure meaningful inclusion of young people and women in key leadership and decision-making roles.

Yesufu, a vocal supporter of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed her concerns in a post shared on her X handle on Wednesday.

“Dear Coalition (ADC), women leader and youth leader positions cannot be the only roles reserved for women and youths,” she wrote. “A table filled with older generation men cannot be the sole decision-makers moving forward. Women and youths must be integral to decision-making processes, not added later as a form of tokenism.”

She emphasized the importance of active participation, urging young Nigerians and women to take charge and make their voices heard.

“Dear women and youths, now is the time to leverage your numbers. Speak loudly. Join the movement. Step into leadership. Become delegates and active members. Overwhelm the system for good with bold, innovative ideas,” she added.

Yesufu’s remarks came in response to the official unveiling of the ADC as the new political platform set to lead the opposition in the 2027 elections against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The unveiling ceremony, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, saw former Senate President David Mark named interim National Chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola appointed as interim Secretary of the coalition.

According to the party’s founding National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, ADC leaders willingly stepped aside to pave the way for a fresh leadership to guide the party in a new direction.
